Kempe windows
The north wall of the north aisle of the church has three decorated windows, each with stained glass, which light the aisle. There is a brass plaque which explains that the stained glass in these windows was erected to the glory of God in memory of George Chapman and his wife Mary. According to the reference book 'The Corpus of Kempe Stained Glass in the UK and Ireland' ISBN 0951312510. These windows are the work of the noted Victorian maker of stained glass, Charles Kempe. The window nearest to the narthex represents the Annunciation. Ref YOR (WR) 31.1 completed in 1896. Mary is seated at a reading desk and the Angel Gabriel is standing in front of her. The middle window represents the Nativity. Ref YOR (WR) 31.2 completed also in 1896. The window shows Mary holding the new-born baby Jesus and to the left-hand side of the scene stand the shepherds. The third window, at the east end of the north aisle wall, illustrates the Flight into Egypt. Ref YOR (WR) 31.3 completed 1901. Mary is riding on a donkey, holding the baby Jesus safely in her arms; an angel is holding the donkeys bridles whilst Joseph leads the way in front and a host of angels look down from above.
The brass plaque showing that the Kempe windows were erected in memory of George and Mary Chapman. George was a local farmer. Their graves are just the other side of these windows, a large monument in the shape of a cross.
